Is Mount Bromo Worth It? A Mount Bromo Motorcycle Guide

In an age where adventure beckons and wanderlust is on the rise, one burning inquiry takes center stage: Is Mount Bromo worth it? The journey to Mount Bromo, particularly on a motorcycle, promises an exhilarating and distinctive experience, but it isn’t without its share of logistical complexities and safety considerations. I have a hunch that, since you’re reading this, you are not interested in sitting in a 4×4 Jeep traffic or taking a hazy, clichéd “insta-worthy” selfie while a few thousand other travelers wait their turn.

The beauty of this journey is that it accommodates smaller and bigger motorcycles (yes, we offer both), depending on your skill level. Navigating certain sections can feel like traversing a desert, where the key is to shift your weight backward, work in harmony with the handlebars, and maintain a steady throttle.

And with an early arrival—say, around 10:00 a.m.—you could have the entire place to yourself and a handful of local enthusiasts present. You will escape neither the exorbitant park fees nor the incessant horseback ride offers on sometimes sickly animals or the reckless (some might say, vengeful) driving of the Jeep Mafia, but at least you get to see the mountain on your terms and at a time of your choosing.

First, let’s appreciate:

The best time to visit Mount Bromo is during the dry season, which typically spans from April to October, with June to September being particularly favorable. During this period, the region experiences lower rainfall, ensuring a more enjoyable and comfortable visit. In contrast, the wet season, lasting from November to March, sees a higher incidence of rain, making outdoor activities more challenging. August stands out as the driest month, offering ideal conditions for travelers, while December tends to be the wettest, making it less conducive for tourism.

But we recognize that each traveler has unique needs and preferences when it comes to exploring the world, and so, to assist you in making an informed decision, here is our guide:

Insight: The entire Surabaya region is a desert composed of volcanic sand, resulting in temperature fluctuations that defy expectations. On certain mornings, especially in proximity to Mt. Bromo, you may awaken to bone-chilling single-digit temperatures, only to swiftly shed your thermal layers from your motorcycle jacket as the sun ascends.

The Significance of Mount Bromo

East Java, Indonesia, and in the heart of The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, we encounter one of the most intriguing volcanoes in the world, Mt. Bromo. In fact, this whole park is nestled within picturesque volcanic mountain splendor. Some like the neighboring Mt. Semeru are still visibly active, coughing up mile-high columns of ash every few hours.

And although Mount Bromo’s top is 2,329 meters (7,641 feet) above sea level, getting there is doable and typically only takes 20 to 30 minutes. The overall rise is decreased because the excursion begins at a higher elevation.

For a more tranquil experience, we recommend exploring this wonder on a weekday or during off-peak hours to evade the crowds. But it’s not just the volcano aura that draws us to this mountain. It’s surrounded by a sea of black sand, which makes it the ideal destination for dual sport and enduro enthusiasts and 4×4 drivers alike. There is at least a mile or more of the stuff in any direction, and you can choose to go around the mountain in circles, enjoying the most exciting trails and breathtaking views regular visitors just never get to see.

Then there is this other group of people who you will see carrying flowers and food up the mountain. They are pilgrims coming to pay homage to Brahma, a Hindu creator god, highlighting the spiritual and cultural significance of the geological marvel. See? Even the locals could only explain the mountain’s magnificence with mythology and association with deities!

The adventure begins with a pre-dawn wake-up call at 4:00 a.m., followed by a thrilling motorcycle ride to an observation deck affording a breathtaking view of the volcanic park. Here, another natural phenomenon can be observed. In the distance, Mount Semeru can be seen, gracing us with mini eruptions. Every hour, the volcano ejects a column of ash one kilometer high, and our participants at dawn witness a unique natural event – a volcanic eruption.

During one of the tours, we observed sulfur being emitted to a height of about three kilometers. And in 2022, we even caught a strong eruption of the volcano, which lasted several days.

Go It Solo? Mount Bromo Without a Guide

A rider takes a tumble into a ditch, as I quickly come to the rescue. Thinking about a solo ride?
A rider takes a tumble into a ditch, as I quickly come to the rescue. Thinking about a solo ride?

While guided tours are fantastic, exploring this magnificent place on your own can also be rewarding. There are no major security concerns, to say the least, as the area is quite populated and remains a bustling tourist hub throughout the year. That said, going solo, you may miss out on local expertise and some money-saving and time-saving tips, as well as the opportunity to discover hidden gems away from the constant buzz of the jeep crowds. But if this is your preferred way to experience an authentic adventure, then consider:

  • Getting A Rental Motorcycle: Finding a motorcycle to rent shouldn’t be so hard as you will find locals zipping around on little 125s and small scooters with amazing sand riding skills. But to get something more reliable, you will need to look to a more specialized motorcycle rental company like OFF LIMITS TOURS. The sand is thick in most sections, especially if you are approaching from Malang (be careful as there are many impassable dead ends in this direction) so, an enduro motorcycle is the weapon of choice. Don’t be embarrassed, though, when you find locals smoking you on little scooters with bald tires; they just know their way better on the sand.
  • Dress For Random Extreme Weather and Slide: As earlier noted, temperatures around the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park can be rather wild with extreme cold and incessant winds punctuated by black desert sand. It can be a rather challenging ride, so you will need to dress for the slide and yet remain flexible to wrestle the deep sand. We have done the trip countless times and will advise on just what to wear based on the motorcycle of choice and what you have available in your armory.
  • Arrange For A Local Guardian Angel: Finally, even if you decide to go the solo route, it’s always good to make an acquaintance with a local service that can rescue you in case you get lost or have a major breakdown. We have trailers regularly ferrying motorcycles to and from Bali and would be more than eager to help a fellow biker.
  • Approach From Probolinggo: If you are doing a long-distance solo ride, then you are probably packing half a ton on a bigger rhinoceros, and so, naturally, you want a more direct route. Don’t worry though, you needn’t be a former Dakar Rally racer to do it. It’s doable with moderate skill. It’s the reckless Jeep drivers you should be wary of.

But Seriously, Consider A Guided Motorcycle Tour of Mount Bromo

Finding yourself a good motorcycle (not the small dilapidated 125s locals ride) with predictable handling in towns like Probolinggo can be quite the hassle. Remember, this is a tourist destination, and everywhere you look, someone is trying to rip you off, so without local contacts like the ones we have at OFF LIMITS TOURS, your chances of actually enjoying the trip are pretty slim.
